“Some of Us Are Brave”
Black Women Radicals
Creative Consultant x Photographer x Videographer
For the "Black Feminists Taught Me" project, a partnership between Black Women Radicals and Philadelphia Print Works, I led the visual storytelling and documentary production across three major cities: Philadelphia, Baltimore, and New York City. My role was to capture the enduring legacy of Black women and gender-expansive individuals through cinematic interview vignettes and intimate portraiture. I directed and produced the content that highlights the lessons of contemporary cultural producers, writers, activists, and scholars, including Dr. Joanne V. Gabbin and Akemi Kochiyama. This involved developing a cohesive aesthetic that was at once earthy, energetic, and contemplative, with a rich, rustic, and vibrant look and feel that honored the depth of the subject matter.
In addition to directing the video series, I provided still photography for a private portrait session with the project's lead curator. The images, which explored her family's story and its profound influence on her personal, political, and racial identity, were later exhibited at The Colored Girls Museum in "Sit A Spell: An Invitation and Invocation." For the broader project, I meticulously documented over 26 distinct interviews and edited a range of long and short-form videos and teasers optimized for web and social platforms. The final products were a testament to my commitment to creating compelling, high-quality visuals that tell powerful stories with intention and a deep respect for the subjects.
